Licensing Overview

Open Source Version / SpotLink Public License

We are huge fans of Terracotta, and the inspiration for this license structure comes from them. As such, the SpotLink Public License (call it the “SPL”) is based heavily on the Terracotta Public License, which in turn is based on the Mozilla Public License, version 1.1 (call it the “MPL”). Like others, we’ve made a few modifications to make it specific to SpotLink, including an attribution clause. The SPL gives you the freedom to use SpotLink, modify its source code, and distribute it for free.

If you distribute SpotLink, or software that you built with SpotLink, the attribution clause requires you to display the words “SpotLink is powered by This Technology” in your user interfaces. If you distribute SpotLink with code that you don’t contribute back to the open source community, we ask that you let us know of its existence in the wild to avoid confusion. For clarity, “distribute” means to give or sell software that includes SpotLink code to someone outside of your company or organization. Keep in mind that the attribution clause doesn’t apply to most end users of SpotLink. If you’re using SpotLink, but not distributing it, then you don’t need to display the attribution (but we appreciate it when you do).

Commercial Version / SpotLink Enterprise License

This Technology supports subscriptions that are covered by the SpotLink Enterprise License, which offers warranty and indemnification assurances and removes the attribution clause that appears in our open source license.
