Plug-in for SpotLink interconnect software enables programmers to consolidate inventory across online and cable, speed monetization of VOD and nDVR ads.

NEW YORK CITY, DECEMBER 20, 2011 – This Technology, a leading provider of software solutions for dynamic ad insertion (DAI), today announced that it is developing a plug-in for its SpotLink interconnect software that supports the full functionality of video technology company FreeWheel’s Monetization Rights Management® (MRM).

The non-exclusive agreement gives programmers that have already deployed FreeWheel’s MRM the ability to manage ad insertion on any MSO platform with near-term focus on Video on Demand (VOD) and network DVR (nDVR) ads and DAI using their existing FreeWheel systems, providing operating efficiencies and cost savings. These programmers will also be able to consolidate VOD and nDVR DAI ad inventory and other emerging MSO DAI video platforms with online video ad inventory, providing necessary scale to ad sales operations. Major programmers and operators will implement the plug-in across systems and expect to rollout initial production implementations in early 2012.

This Technology’s standards-based SpotLink connects SCTE 130-compliant DAI systems to broadband ad servers, removing integration challenges that exist for networks that want to use their existing broadband ad server with any MSO system. Whereas core functionality of SpotLink includes translating all of the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s (IAB) Video Advertising Serving Template (VAST) standard, the new plug-in for FreeWheel will incorporate all of the features and functionality offered by MRM, while still remaining compatible with SCTE-130.

Key MRM features available via the SpotLink plug-in beyond traditional IAB VAST functionality include:

  • Commercial break pattern control to seamlessly adjust ad load and “age” a show from TV Everywhere C3/C8 catch-up measurement windows into “online” ad models and monetization;
  • “TV-like” ad choreography over the length of a video play-out that contemplates commercial break pods and position;
  • Advertiser industry and category exclusives by show and/or pod; and
  • Advanced metrics and inventory forecasting.

“Using This Technology’s SpotLink plug-in for MRM, select programmer customers can both minimize investments needed to do cable DAI, as well as more effectively monetize the VOD ad inventory that’s been sitting on the table,” said Brent Horowitz, VP of business development at FreeWheel.

This Technology’s plug-in for FreeWheel will be licensed to programmers that want to interface with any MSO using SpotLink and This Technology’s ad decision service router. The result is the unification of ad decision-making and reporting. For MSOs, the flow of subscriber data information that influences ad decisions is fully protected and controlled.

“For MSOs that integrate This Technology’s products into their networks, we can ensure the quality, reliability and security of all DAI-related SCTE-130 communication on any MSO platform – VOD, nDVR, TV Everywhere or IP-based,” said Jeffrey Sherwin, CEO of This Technology. “As a result, MSOs and programmers can make immediate, efficient use of inventory where replaceable, dynamic and/or addressable.”
